Dates: May 4 – June 29, 2015

Opening reception: During the Amherst Gallery Walk, June 4, 2015, 5 – 8 PM.

Hours: Town Hall typical hours: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday.

Photographs from near and far are presented as images in black and white that have been produced by traditional wet-chemistry darkroom techniques.  The images that are shown range from landscapes that suggest serenity, to images with a smaller field of view that reveal textural details, to images that are relatively abstract. The abstracts invite the viewer to explore the image to see if they can see what the photographer might have seen when he captured the image; they provoke discussion.

The Animal That Therefore I Am

June 4, 2015 – June 28, 2015

The Animal That Therefore I Am is titled after Jacques Derrida’s ten-hour address challenging traditional human-animal relationships through language and examinations of animal subjectivity to determine how these elements affect the understanding of human existence. This project examines the tension between the personification and othering of animals through uncanny representations that balance discomfort and whimsy, the familiar vs unfamiliar, and explore our perception of such balances in their roles as our social partners, literary symbols, and feral adversaries. The exclusion of human figures forces the viewer to address these animals, confront, and consider these perceptions.

The opening reception is June 4th, 2015 from 5-8pm.

Available for viewing at artALIVE during regular store hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10-6, Sunday 11-6.

The Art and Life of Edward Kwiatkowski

CircaNowGallery, formerly the Freedom Trails Gallery, is presenting the work of local Holyoke artist Edward Kwiatkowski. This exhibit was originally presented at the Holyoke Senior Center in the fall of 2014 as a memorial to Ed and his art, who passed away in January of 2014.

Edward Kwiatkowski began his study in art with the guidance of Mrs. Margaret Holt in 1954 at the Adults Art and Crafts Class of the United Cerebral Palsy Association in Springfield, MA. Born in 1936 with cerebral palsy, Ed had very limited use of his arms, but worked hard at making the most of his abilities like playing chess and checkers and discovering his artistic talent. With anonymous support, Ed attended the Cleveland Institute of Art (1968 to 1970) where he received a two-year scholarship and studied watercolor, design and life drawing.

Watching for my daughter, photo installation (detail), Marianne Connolly 2015

MARIANNE CONNOLLY: BETWEEN THINGS

Marianne Connolly’s night-time walks provide photographs edged with a tinge of danger, stories told across the gallery’s walls (in squares, grids and collages); visitors will also find a mysterious (just possibly vertical) re-telling of the Rapunzel story.

Connolly finds that working in this series of night photographs allows her to glimpse the “untold” stories: toys abandoned in the dirt; the brilliant blue of a campus safety light; the shadow of a tree over a manhole cover. The work is about close observation, but also about taking care, watching shadows, and the beauty of light in the darkness.

Some of the work will be collages from art history books, biology and anatomy texts and magazines, cut and pasted by hand into black-and-white mysteries. Where did those parachutes come from? Why is that child all alone?

Opening Reception: Thursday, June 4, 5-8:00 pm

Findings / Artists in Conversation:  Marianne Connolly, Rebecca Muller and Nancy Meagher. Thursday, June 18, 7:30 pm
